Our Vision

A country where everyone can thrive, free of unjust systems that suppress universal rights, including human rights, democratic freedoms, and the right to a safe climate.

Our Purpose

Grata Fund leverages targeted funding of high impact litigation and integrated campaign strategies to break systemic gridlocks and create lasting change on human rights, democratic freedoms, and the right to a safe climate. We advocate for a robust democracy and work in partnership with social justice movements, marginalised communities, civil society, litigators and community lawyers.

The Impact You Can Make

Grata supports cases and campaigns that have the potential to break gridlocks and create significant lasting impact for communities.

Grata has a small but growing community of supporters, and we receive no government funding. Strategic gifts from philanthropists who want to see real-world, systemic change have enabled Grata to have outsized impact since the organisation was founded in 2017.

In the last year alone we have supported 2 landmark Supreme Court and High Court wins for First Nations remote communities’ housing and water rights that have contributed to a $4 billion housing investment plan and a $53 million federal investment in remote water infrastructure; supported Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul’s Australian Climate Case, which could see the Court order the Australian Government make rapid emission cuts this decade; and saw wins in our litigation strategy to force reform of our broken Freedom of Information system, with a decision in March 2024 that closed a major accountability loophole for government Ministers seeking to evade scrutiny.

Do you have DGR1 status?

Yes, we are registered charity with the ACNC and we have DGR1 status, meaning donations to Grata Fund are tax deductible.

How many cases are you currently supporting?

Thanks to the generosity of Grata’s donors, in the last year we supported 22 groundbreaking cases. In 16 of those cases, we provided integrated advocacy campaigns and communications support to empower people and communities in their fight for justice.

40% of cases supported by Grata were led by First Nations people. We are continuing to prioritise our deep commitment to working alongside communities and social movements who are at the frontlines of the fight against systemic injustice.

Who do you work with?

Our lean, high performing team is able to deliver outsized impact through an operating model that involves deep and strategic collaboration. Grata plays a unique coordination and amplification role, bringing together some of the country's top legal minds, including barristers, commercial law firms and community legal centres; plaintiffs and communities; advocacy partners and other NGOs, as well as philanthropic funders, to support each case and campaign.

In 2023, we partnered with 71 legal and advocacy partners.

How can I find out more about Grata’s work? Do you have an annual report?

Our website contains information on our work including cases supported, media releases, and our annual reports (Impact Reports), which are available here.

Please contact Hannah Foster, Head of Philanthropy, at [email protected] if you have specific questions about our work or would like to arrange to speak with Isabelle Reinecke, our Executive Director & Founder, or other members of our team.

Can I have a copy of your financials?

Yes, a copy of each year’s financial report is available via the ACNC website, or please contact us to request a copy and we will email it to you.

How else can I support Grata, beyond a donation?

Most of our philanthropic support comes via referrals from current Grata donors. Sharing our website or contact details with others in your networks who are aligned with the work we do, and speaking with others about why you’ve chosen to support Grata Fund, is incredibly helpful.

For those interested in creative ways to leverage your capital for good, we’d love to discuss with you our collective impact model for removing financial barriers to strategic litigation in Australia.
