In 2016, the Grata Fund Community enabled Doctors4Refugees and Fitzroy Legal Service to take the Government to the High Court over draconian gag laws in the Border Force Act. The laws threatened doctors, teachers and social workers who spoke out against abuse on offshore detention centres with imprisonment. In response to the case, the Government repealed the laws in 2017 - finally allowing the free flow of information to the Australian public about the conditions facing asylum seekers in offshore detention.
Then, our community chipped in to enable Environmental Justice Australia and their client to hold the Commonwealth Bank accountable in court over climate change risk. In response to the case, the bank became the first of the Big Four banks to properly address the seriousness of climate change risk in its Annual Report.
