Our Vision
A country where everyone can thrive, free of unjust systems that suppress universal rights, including human rights, democratic freedoms, and the right to a safe climate.
Our Purpose
Grata Fund leverages targeted funding of high impact litigation and integrated campaign strategies to break systemic gridlocks and create lasting change on human rights, democratic freedoms, and climate justice. We advocate for a robust democracy and work in partnership with social justice movements, marginalised communities, civil society, litigators and community lawyers.
Grata Fund aligns with global movements to agitate for change including through the UN Sustainable Development Goals, by supporting cases and campaigns that pursue Gender Equality (SDG5), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG6), Reduced Inequalities (SDG10), Climate Action (SDG13) and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG16). We believe that strategic, collaborative action has the greatest potential to unlock lasting change in these areas.
Impact Statement
We rely on philanthropic partners and everyday Australians who generously support and fund our work, to ensure that we can continue to hold power to account in the areas of human rights, democratic freedoms and climate justice. Grata receives no government funding, which enables us to remain positioned to challenge structural inequalities and injustices with integrity.
Strategic gifts from philanthropists who want to see tangible, systemic change have enabled Grata to have outsized impact since the organisation was founded in 2017.
In 2024, Grata Fund reached the milestone of over 50 total cases supported. These groundbreaking public interest cases and campaigns have positively impacted all Australians and their ability to access the court system, live free from discrimination, access clean drinking water and safe housing, hold political leaders to account through freedom of information, and challenge unjust climate policies and practices.
In 2025 and beyond we are committing to continuing and growing this impact, and we invite conversations with those who want to join us through targeted, meaningful giving that ensures a strong democracy, safe climate, and protected human rights in Australia.

How many cases are you currently supporting?
Thanks to the generosity of Grata’s donors, in the last year we supported 19 groundbreaking cases. In 13 of those cases, we provided integrated advocacy campaigns and communications support to empower people and communities in their fight for justice.
40% of cases supported by Grata were led by First Nations people. We are continuing to prioritise our deep commitment to working alongside communities and social movements who are at the frontlines of the fight against systemic injustice.
Who do you work with?
Our lean, high performing team is able to deliver outsized impact through an operating model that involves deep and strategic collaboration. Grata plays a unique coordination and amplification role, bringing together some of the country's top legal minds, including barristers, commercial law firms and community legal centres; plaintiffs and communities; advocacy partners and other NGOs, as well as philanthropic funders, to support each case and campaign.
In 2023, we partnered with 71 legal and advocacy partners.
How can I find out more about Grata’s work? Do you have an annual report?

How else can I support Grata, beyond a donation?
