Democracy works when people are able to exercise their right to have a voice, including in the courtroom. Australians are regularly blocked from exercising this basic democratic right because of insurmountable financial barriers to public interest litigation which makes it almost impossible to hold powerful governments and corporate leaders accountable.
Grata works to break down these barriers in three keys areas; human rights, climate justice and democracy and freedoms. We do this using a movement lawyering approach where we work with affected communities and legal and advocacy partners on strategies to tackle injustice through litigation and advocacy that centres the voices and strategies of affected people.
We prioritise cases that have the potential to break gridlocks and create significant sustainable impact for communities.
