Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul – First Nations leaders from remote islands in Guda Maluyligal in the Torres Strait – are taking the Australian government to court for failing to prevent climate change.
This month they will have their case heard in the Federal Court before Chief Justice Mortimer.
Going to court against the whole Australian Government is a brave step and can be incredibly daunting. Will you stand in solidarity with Uncle Paul and Uncle Pabai while they stand in court?
Uncle Paul and Uncle Pabai will argue that the Australian Government has unlawfully breached their duty of care, by failing to take the necessary action to prevent climate change. They are seeking an order from the court requiring the government to prevent this harm to their communities by cutting greenhouse gas emissions -- in line with the best available science. If they win the order would not only benefit Torres Strait people, but all of our communities across Australia.
