NT Govt: Stop punishing Aboriginal people for speaking out

To Chief Minister Gunner:

We call on you to immediately stop claiming dodgy rental ‘debts’ from the community of Santa Teresa.

Drop your countersuit to the Santa Teresa community’s claim and instead direct your attention to fixing the dangerous and unhealthy housing conditions of remote communities.

TAKE ACTION NOW.

For months, Jasmine Cavanagh would wake up in the middle of the night and mop up sewage leaking through her home. She is now in a legal fight for a better home for her kids.

Jasmine and the 70 households in her remote community 80kms outside of Alice Springs who are suing the Northern Territory Government over 600 repairs that went ignored for over five years.

The NT Government countersued for hundreds of thousands of dollars in debts -- money that the community had never been told was owing and that didn’t stack up on examination.

In an urgent injunction last month, the court rebuffed the NT Government for collecting unfair rental debts until the court case is over. Next week the remote community leaders will finally have their case heard in Alice Springs.

Tell the NT Government to stop trying to silence Aboriginal people for speaking up.
