Donate to help get Elders to court

Saibai Elders and community leaders

Uncle Paul and Uncle Pabai have taken the Australian Government to court for its failure to act on climate change and the devastating impact on communities, culture and Country in the Torres Strait.

Next month, the federal court is conducting hearings in the Torres Strait and Chief Justice Mortimer will personally travel to hear the testimony from the community.

Now, we need to make sure that Elders and Custodians across the clan groups who aren't able to live on Boigu and Saibai are able to return to Country to bear witness to the trial. Uncle Paul and Uncle Pabai’s legal team will also need to join them on the islands to represent them in Court. This means chartering flights to the islands which are expensive.

The Federal Court will not return to the islands of Boigu and Saibai for on-Country hearings for this case. If Elders cannot get to the islands they will miss the chance to sit in court as the senior leaders of their community and cultural knowledge holders.

The hearings are starting in a few short weeks. Can you chip in to help ensure Elders across the clan groups don't miss out on bearing witness to these historic hearings?

Charter flights costs thousands of dollars, any donation such as $25, $50, $100, $250 will help fund the costs of this.

All donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible in Australia.

If we raise more than the cost of this campaign, your donation will be used to help cover the cost of ongoing, important Grata work.
