Uncle Paul and Uncle Pabai have taken the Australian Government to court for its failure to act on climate change and the devastating impact on communities, culture and Country in the Torres Strait.
Hearings will start in just a few days; chip in what you can now to help Elders and witnesses get to court and a generous donor will match donations up to $75,000, doubling your impact.
Justice Wigney will personally travel to the islands to hear directly from the community. There’s still time to contribute to ensure that more elders and witnesses can participate in the hearings, including covering costs for chartering flights between islands and ensuring that the full legal team is on the ground. The more community members that can participate as witnesses, the more compelling the evidence will be and the more Elders, the stronger the voice of the community.
The Federal Court will not return to the islands of Boigu and Saibai for on-Country hearings for this case. If Elders cannot get to the islands they will miss the chance to sit in court as the senior leaders of their community and cultural knowledge holders.
Charter flights costs thousands of dollars, any donation such as $25, $50, $100, $250 will help fund the costs of this.
All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible in Australia.
